No criminal in their right mind is going to try and out-run one of these on the motorway.
Sports car manufacturers around the world have a long history of donating cars to the local police. As well as giving the police a useful pursuit vehicle it ensures the manufacturer gets a great deal of relatively cheap publicity.
Lamborghini first donated a Lamborghini Gallardo back in 2004, when two L140 Gallardos were donated in honour of the Italian force's 152nd anniversary. They were used by the Polizia Stradale, the Italian traffic police mainly for publicity, but also saw useful service during emergencies, and also for the transportation of donor organs between hospitals. The specially customised Gallardos had a range of on-board equipment including heart defibrillators for emergencies, and refridgeration for transporting those organs.
In October 2008, a third Lamborghini was presented - this time a then latest model LP560-4. This one was destined for use by the Lazio Highway Police Department. Unfortunately - as the picture shows - not long after it was involved in an accident which caused extensive damage. We should add that this wasn't some kind of Need for Speed Hot Pursuit type smash-up, but instead a relatively low speed accident swerving to avoid a car pulling out of a petrol station on a wet slippery road.
In the Uk two Yellow L140 Gallardos donated by Lamborghini London have been used occasionally at publicity events by the Metropoliton Police - although these have never seen service in the same way as the Italian Police ones.
